Welcome!

I’m Dr. Siobhán Byrne, a professor of International Relations with a focus on Gender, Conflict, and Security. Here, you’ll find updates on my current research, details about the courses I teach, and opportunities for student supervision and collaboration.

Whether you’re a prospective student, fellow researcher, or community member, you are very welcome to reach out with questions or to learn more about the Department of Political Science or the Institute for Intersectionality Studies at the University of Alberta.

I live and work as a settler on the territory of the Néhiyaw (Cree), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Métis, Nakoda (Stoney), Dene, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and Anishinaabe (Ojibway/Saulteaux), lands that are now known as part of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 and homeland of the Métis. For me, this acknowledgment is a reminder of the deep connection between identity and land. As a settler and a guest, I recognize my responsibility to understand how settler colonialism has worked to sever those ties and to support Indigenous sovereignty. Decolonization as a project remains unfinished.
